banner I have been a Lego League coach since 2007. This year, I wanted to document the season to give rookie coaches a resource to help them through to competition. The process can be intense, but it can also be a lot of fun for you and your team.

I hope to cover enough through my posts, but if I leave anything out, please feel free to leave a comment, or contact me.

FLL Scoring Android App

Author: fllCoach | Files under The Game

I’m a software developer by trade. It’s one of the reasons I was tapped to be a Lego League coach even before my daughter was of age.

I recently wanted to learn how to develop Android apps and was trying to decide what I could build to understand how it is done. I realized that an FLL scoring app would be a great, basic app. What resulted is now in the Android Market. Below are a few screen shots:

The app currently in the Market is for the 2010 game, Body Forward, but it’s built so that I can easily exchange the 2010 missions for the upcoming 2011 ones. It runs on Android 1.6 and above. I am releasing it now so that you can try it out and give me some comments to see what features you’d like added or changed. That will give me time to make changes before the 2011 Game is released.

Note that for the 2011 season, Food Factor, each of the mission screens will have a picture of the actual mission. The images in this app came from

Mine, of course, isn’t the only one out there. I found several others, each of which is mentioned at TechBrick. My goal was not to replace them, but as I mentioned above, a way for me to learn Android. Check out all the apps and decide which one is the best for you.

If you do find my app useful, I would appreciate a small donation via the Donate button in the far right column. The Android Market charges a fee to publish apps and I just want to offset that fee. Anything extra will go to FIRST or High Tech Kids.

I look forward to hearing what you think.

    Hi there;
    Looked for your ANDROID App for Food Factors on the Market, and only found the one for last year – Body Forward. Have you released the Food Factors one yet, and if so … it’s not coming up on the Market search.

    Already? The challenge has only been out for a day! čÖé

    I don’t quite understand all the missions yet as my team hasn’t finished the build. But I hope to get it figured out and a new version in the market in the next week or so.

    Thanx for asking!

    UPDATE: I ran into some problems with my development environment last week, but have a work around. I’m hoping to have an initial release by early next week.

    I don’t currently have plans to develop an iPhone app. However, I believe there are already apps in the iTunes app store. Just do a search for them.

    Our FRC team is getting ready for competition in Richmond in 1 1/2 weeks, any chance you have a scouting app available either for android or ipad?

    Sorry. I haven’t been involved with FRC so I don’t know how things are scored. Perhaps in a few years when my daughter graduates to the program, I’ll whip one up.
