banner I have been a Lego League coach since 2007. This year, I wanted to document the season to give rookie coaches a resource to help them through to competition. The process can be intense, but it can also be a lot of fun for you and your team.

I hope to cover enough through my posts, but if I leave anything out, please feel free to leave a comment, or contact me.

Surprise Package

Author: fllCoach | Files under The Game

When my doorbell rang last night, I didn’t know what to expect when I answered the door as I wasn’t expecting anyone. Was it a neighbor kid wanting to play with one of mine? Was it someone wanting to sell me something? Or maybe one of those religious zealots telling me how to find God?

When I got to the door, no one was there. But I saw a UPS truck in the street. Whenever he comes, he likes to play ding dong ditch and just leave presents on the doorstep.

But I didn’t know what it could be. I did order some things as of late but they had all arrived already as far as I recalled.

Imagine my surprise when I saw this:

I couldn’t believe my eyes. It couldn’t be the mat and field kit already, could it? I waited for my daughter to be around before I opened it, and sure enough, it was the mat and a whole slew of LEGO pieces (a.k.a. the field kit). That would explain why I got an invoice yesterday.

Here’s a sneak peak at the mat (apologies for the poor picture quality; I couldn’t get tall enough to get a good, focused shot):

The mat is made out of different material than in previous years. Usually, it’s vinyl, but this year it’s more of a fabric. It will be interesting to see how the new material affects the robot. It may have more grip. It’s definitely flimsier. I haven’t decided if I like it better or not yet.

I checked the FLL web site but didn’t see any missions yet. They must just be trying to get a head start on deliveries. We’re still trying to get our team together, so we won’t be building anything for a while. But it will be nice to get the field kit built before the season starts in earnest.

Anyone else get a present from UPS recently?

Apparently we’ve got the same UPS guy. He must have as many stops to make as Santa.

My 10-year-olds are brand new with a new coach (me) so we’re meeting over the summer to bond and learn a few skills. They started putting together the mission modules last Tuesday. Is there any correlation between module and bag? It seems like there’s a loose match, so you only have to tear open a couple bags, but perhaps it was just coincidence. We ended up with them all open anyway. Holy cow, check out the bacteria and virus file. Making it is like knitting, except with legos.

This is my first post, so may I say that I love your blog? Thanks for putting out this info for folks like me with enthusiasm but no experience.

The pieces for all the models are all mixed together. Bags do not correspond to models.

Check out my post, Putting the Field Kit Together, for tips on how to get prepared before you start building.

Thanx for the kudos. And thanx for visiting.
